"This feel-good, uplifting read is filled with positive messages about self-care and self-love. It is sure to please foodies, home-makeover buffs, and anyone looking for a light-hearted romantic read." –USA Today
A sexy romance about a plus-size sweetheart who gets a full-life makeover after a brutal breakup and falls for the incredibly hot contractor renovating her home.
Savvy Sheldon spends a lot of time tiptoeing around the cracks in her life: her high-stress and low-thanks job, her clueless boyfriend and the falling-apart kitchen she inherited from her beloved grandma—who taught her how to cook and how to love people by feeding them. But when Savvy's world starts to crash down around her, she knows it's time for some renovations.
Starting from the outside in, Savvy tackles her crumbling kitchen, her relationship with her body, her work–life balance (or lack thereof) and, last but not least, her love life. The only thing that doesn't seem to require effort is her ride-or-die squad of friends. But as any home-reno-show junkie can tell you, something always falls apart during renovations. First, Savvy passes out during hot yoga. Then it turns out that the contractor she hires is the same sexy stranger she unintentionally offended by judging based on appearances. Worst of all, Savvy can't seem to go anywhere without tripping over her ex and his latest "upgrade." Savvy begins to realize that maybe she should've started her renovations the other way around: beginning with how she sees herself before building a love that lasts.
"A heartfelt, hopeful, and humorous exploration of the importance of learning to love yourself...a joy to read." –Booklist, STARRED review

Narrator Adenrele Ojo will amaze listeners with her vocal talents in this debut romance. Savvy Sheldon--whose boyfriend of six years dumps her by explaining that he's "looking for an upgrade"--must rebound. At first devastated, she rallies by focusing on herself through her own "Project Upgrade"--getting back into shape, renovating her outdated kitchen, connecting with her best friends, and exploring a new relationship with her sexy contractor. Ojo's performance embraces Savvy's vulnerability and excitement as she rediscovers her true self. Ojo's vocal range truly shines as she embodies the colorful characters in Savvy's life. This narration is comfortable--like a group of girlfriends laughing out loud or leaning in conspiratorially at brunch or on the couch drinking wine. P.C. © AudioFile 2022, Portland, Maine

McCoy's debut introduces Savvy, who launches a revenge-body regimen, complete with yoga, tennis, healthful recipes, and plenty of "me" time to get back at her toxic ex-boyfriend. She finally remodels her kitchen, accepts the promotion at work, and develops a healthy dose of self-esteem. But the underwriting job promotion means less time for self-care, and Savvy isn't sure that working longer hours is the correct decision. Savvy's life journey raises important quandaries that will hit home for many people--dieting for the wrong reasons, the importance of self-care, and work/life boundaries. Narrator Adenrele Ojo superbly voices Savvy and her strong Black female friends, as well as a host of other minor characters, who are often gathered around a table with coffee or wine in hand. Ojo's satisfying descriptions of the food Savvy prepares and tastes will make readers salivate--it's obvious that the debut author is a private chef, as well as a writer who celebrates body diversity. While marketed as a contemporary romantic comedy, the relationship between Savvy and Spencer, the kitchen contractor, doesn't take center stage. VERDICT Offer to readers looking for relationship fiction about strong female friendships.--Sarah Hill
